How to Turn a Night Owl into an Early Bird

I'm NOT a morning person. I like sleeping in and staying up late. I love late night TV and cheesy reruns in the middle on the night. I like working until I'm tired and getting up when I'm ready to. If I had my way, I would do something that required an alarm clock maybe once or twice a week. Unfortunately, bills must be paid and the car requires gas. And, frankly, I do like my job. My students are pretty nice, and we're having a good quarter so far. I could just do without the 1-hour commute and the 7:30 am start time.

For the past month I've been trying to change my sleeping habits. I have been setting my alarm for an early hour and making plans to go to bed early. I have even gotten to the point where I stop working at either 10 or 11 every night. But I still haven't been able to manage falling asleep early, unless I'm so completely exhausted that I can't help it. And I still can't wake up early, except on the days that I have to go to work. On the nights before I have to go to work, I am so anxious about waking up on time that I can't sleep and end up getting only about 4 hours of sleep before I crawl out of bed. So when I come back home in the afternoon, I have to take a nap, which, of course, puts my timing off for my sleep time at night.

But I haven't given up. Every night I think, "Tomorrow is the day that I turn into a morning person." I'll let you know how it goes.

Insomnia

A few years ago I had very bad insomnia, and my friends on the SCC boards posted boring movies I should watch to help me sleep. Well, pirates (et al.), it is time to drag that list out again. *sigh*

I'm Sick . . .

I woke up last Tuesday with a sore throat, and my skin hurt. I had a ton of stuff to do that day, including starting a new GMAT Advanced class and checking out the restaurant that is catering my parents' anniversary party. So I basically ignored the entire sick thing, and I was actually successful at sticking to my schedule.

I ended up basically having an entire week off, due to the 4th of July holiday and the fact that one of my GMAT classes just ended. This turned out to be a good thing, since have spent most of my time off being sick. I felt worse on Wednesday, though it was pretty much more of the same. By Thursday my skin didn't hurt anymore, but I was starting to get congested. On Friday my sore throat was gone, but I was all stuffed up and starting to cough. I managed to take a long nap on Friday afternoon, which helped A LOT. But by Saturday, it was even worse. I slept a lot during the day, but Saturday night was impossible. I had so much trouble breathing that I only managed to sleep for about 3 hours. When I got up in the morning, I found my dad's stash of Sudafed, and after breakfast I went back to bed. I woke up only when the Sudafed wore off and I couldn't breathe again.

I seem to be better now, though. I haven't taken any Sudafed since 3pm, and I'm actually breathing OK. We'll see how tonight goes.

I hate being sick. Bleah . . .

5 for 5, week 4

Well, week 3 was pretty much a wash. I only managed to earn 10 points. Well, actually, when I realized that I wasn't going to make it to 20, I pretty much gave up trying. Bad Kat. Oh well. It's a new week. I'm considering last week a practice run and am making no changes for this week. Here are my 5 (again):

1. Get out of bed before 8:00.

2. Drink 1.5L of water.

3. Wear pedometer and walk at least 4000 steps.

4. Take medicine on time.

5. Walk the dog.

I'm pretty sure I'll do better this week, despite the busyness. I have to, or I won't get my MP3 player before my trip to New York! How's that for incentive?

5 for 5, week 3

Well, I didn't do as well as I'd have liked during week 2, but I still managed to earn 20 points. I'm saving my reward for a while, until I decide exactly what I want from the craft store. This week I was a little ambitious. I didn't make many changes, but I tweaked the old 5 just a little.

1. Get out of bed before 8:00. I pushed this up yet another 1/2 hour. I think this is going to be hard to do, since I'm starting most of my classes this week, but it's something I need to do. I really don't like wasting half of my morning in bed.

2. Drink 1.5L of water. I have not been doing well with this one at all. I was hoping to increase this to 2L this week, but, since I almost never reached this goal last week, I had to keep it the same this week.

3. Wear pedometer and walk at least 4000 steps. I increased this quite a bit. I'm getting to a point where I'm working hard on my 5, and that's where I want to be.

4. Take medicine on time. I'm doing pretty well on this one and will most likely replace it with something else next week. Not sure what yet.

5. Walk the dog. This is the same every week, but the distance actually changes. We are walking pretty far now, over a mile, a lot of which is uphill. We'll get to a much longer distance at some point, but the increases aren't too big in order to fool myself into thinking I'm not walking that far. LOL

I'm not doing well at all this week, and it's already mathematically impossible for me to reach my 20 points. Oh well. Keep on keeping on, I guess. *sigh*
